Ocean Winds, our majority shareholder, was one of the main sponsors of the fifth local ICEC edition, the International Civil Engineering Competition, organized by the International Association of Civil Engineering Students from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), that took place between March 13th and 17th.
This competition aims to promote practical activities for the students, giving them the opportunity to apply what they learn in their degrees and a greater contact with the business environment. Therefore, the competition guideline was to make teams of three Civil Engineering students from the university and overcome three complex engineering challenges over five days.
One of the challenges, about Structures, was to create a floating platform to support a model wind turbine at FEUP’s Hydraulic Laboratory, valuing the structures that would better withstand the efforts applied. In this challenge, the students counted on the support of Daniel Ribeiro, WindFloat Atlantic’s Asset Manager, and Professors Filipe Magalhães and Tiago Ferradosa from FEUP, who helped the students in the design of the structure as well as in its assembly.
As this academic field is closely related to offshore wind, Ocean Winds, as one of WFA’s shareholders, took the opportunity to introduce the offshore wind energy sector, and the technical challenges related to WindFloat Atlantic, the world’s first semi-submersible floating project, which is located just 74 kilometres from Porto.
Thanks to all the students that participated and showed us their incredible #offshorewind skills!
